A vocation that became a mission
Mother María Güell gave shape to her charism in a religious family called to live evangelical humility, simplicity, and charity in the spirit of the Heart of Mary.
Mother María Güell was, above all, a woman deeply open to the Holy Spirit. Her vocation as foundress did not arise from a personal project, but from a humble and trusting response to God’s call, discerned in prayer and confirmed in service to those most in need.
To contemplate Mother María Güell as foundress is to discover a woman who knew how to listen to God in the concrete reality of her time and to respond with courage, humility, and love. Her life continues to invite us to be led by the Spirit and to serve with a heart shaped like Mary’s.
Jesus has chosen us so that we may belong entirely to Him.
Mother María Güell · Counsels and Memories
Her daily closeness to the sick and the poor became the place where Mother María Güell recognized God’s will with growing clarity. She did not set out to create a new work; she simply sought to live the Gospel faithfully.
Yet the strength of charity led her to gather other women who shared the same desire to serve.
In this way the Congregation of the Missionary Daughters of the Heart of Mary was born: a concrete response to the needs of her time and the expression of a simple, deeply evangelical and Marian spirituality.
Marian spirituality held a central place in the life and work of Mother María Güell. In the Heart of Mary she found the model of a silent, obedient, and available faith: a faith that keeps the Word and puts it into practice.
The Congregation was placed under the protection of the Heart of Mary, so that it might learn from her how to love, to serve, and to remain faithful even in times of difficulty.
Jesus and Mary have done everything in the Institute. I entrusted it to them, and they did everything.
Mother María Güell · Counsels and Memories
As foundress, Mother María Güell passed on to the Congregation a charism both simple and demanding, centred on three fundamental attitudes:
Humility, as truth and abandonment in God.
Simplicity, in life, relationships, and service.
Charity, lived concretely, especially with the sick.
These attitudes were not merely ideals, but a way of life meant to be seen in daily gestures and in the way each person related to others.
Mother María Güell lived her mission as foundress with a maternal spirit, evangelical firmness, and deep respect for each person. She knew how to accompany, correct, and encourage with charity, always seeking the good of the community and fidelity to the charism received.
Her authority was rooted in her life of prayer, in her personal integrity, and in her complete trust in God.
Love one another, bear with one another, forgive one another.
Mother María Güell · Counsels and Memories
The founding of the Congregation was not an isolated event of the past. The charism received by Mother María Güell remains alive today in the Missionary Daughters of the Heart of Mary, present wherever the Church needs them, especially in service to the sick and the most vulnerable.
Her figure as foundress continues to be a point of reference and a guide for living the mission with fidelity, joy, and an evangelical spirit.
Her founding life still shows that charity, when it is born of God and lived with humility, can become a work that endures through time and continues to bear fruit.
